The historic cellars of Montepulciano and the pecorino of Pienza

Price starting from € 65 per person with guide, visit to historic cellar with tasting of 3 wines, and cheese tasting in Pienza.

The historic cellars of Vino Nobile, located below ground beneath Tuscan Renaissance palaces, will be at the centre of this tour in the heart of Montepulciano.

Vino Nobile, the famous red wine of Montepulciano, owns a deep ruby colour, which, with ageing, turns into garnet. It is full bodied, with an intense but delicate aroma characterised by shades of black cherry, blackberry and berries, plum and olive, as well as floral traces such as that of violet, and herbs and earth. It has a fresh and sparkling flavour and, while the tannic accent is quite pronounced, ageing creates a softer and more refined palate.

Your guide will accompany you through the beautiful historical centre of the town, recounting its curiosities and mysteries of the past, from the excavations made by the Etruscans that still exist today (mostly as cellars). Montepulciano was an ally of Florence during the Middle Ages. The Medici family wanted to create a “new Florence” of the small medieval city that was located with great importance as it was in view of the "Roman road" - more simply called the Via Francigena by the Romans. You will be welcomed into one of the oldest underground cellars of Montepulciano. The gigantic and evocative oak barrels hold the precious Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG and Rosso di Montepulciano DOC inside. The tour continues with a tasting of the 3 wines and the explanation of their main characteristics.

After the visit you will continue to the town of Pienza, known essentially for three elements: its splendid architecture, a Pope, and its delicious sheep cheese called Pecorino. The centre of Pienza was completely modified during the Renaissance and holds an intriguing history thanks to Pope Aeneas Silvio Piccolomini II, who left his mark on the city. With your guide, you will visit the church and the village, ending the day with a delicious tasting of the famed pecorino.
